I have a friend with 4 chiclids and a large sized pleco.... they are currently in a 35 gallon tank.... the chiclids are 3 babies and one adult, as the babies grow, how large of a tank is an appropriate size to move them into? i think 35gal is toooooo small!
thanks for the imput :)

Specifically what type of cichlids? There are some species in which a 30gal may be adequate and other species in which a 30gal will be insufficient.

to keep the aggression down i would saw preferibly 75 g but a 55g might just do it...

due to the larger tank size should he add another cleaner such as an additional pleco or snails??

35 g is more than sufficient for those 4 fish even at adult size. Just provide enough caves.

Never kept firemouths...gather they are reasonably peaceable and hit 6 inches or so. Are they male or female ? Ditch the johanni it shouldn't be in with them anyway.
You need to work out what kind of pleco this is...potentially a common plec therefore potentially you need a huge tank for it, it may be a bristlenose in which case not nearly so big.

they are babies from my bro's couple, both of which are about 6 or 7 inches with the boy being the smaller of the 2..... i dont know if they're male or female because A.) they're teeny babies and B.) they're not my fish
i'm 90% sure he's not going to get rid of the johanni since it was his first fish, maybe he'll just keep it in the 35 and move the babies to a 75... hmmm

just googled both those types of plecos.... it's def the common kind, and it's about 6 inches long at this point
thanks for the suggentions guys, i just found a 75 on craigslist for cheap, so i bet he'll agree to go that route

I have a small pleco in a 55g and he seems to do a good job of keeping it clean.

oh boy is he in for a surprise!!!!
what size tank should you put a fish that size in? how long does it take to grow that large?
don't know how quickly he would max out...would be fine for a while in the 75 but I see people on here mostly reccomending 100 minimum for a common at about 15 - 16 inches...especially with other fish in there...lets wait see what people who've kept 'em to full size say :) I havn't.

I've seen a pleco that was at least 20"+ , he could hardly fit in this 15g they had him in(pet shop).

Plecos create more waste than any cleaning they do. Put the FM in a 55 or bigger.

It will work for a while
I would get a 55 gallon in the future though.
commons plecs get big. I always used them bc they were cheap and ate algae. When they got to big I gave them away and got another. But god do they poop a lot.

get a 125g or 150g, add more cichlids and keep the common pleco ;)
