Okay, I have heard lots about the Clown Loaches with all the threads that I have been reading. They look like quit intriguing and I have just a few questions.
1. How big do they get
2. Do they like to be in a group
3. What other fish go well with them

Okay...ready..set...go:mwave:

1. I have seen maxes anywhere from 12 inches to 16 inches. They get BIG.. it just takes them a long time to get that size (they can live 20+ years).

2. Yes, recommended to keep them in groups of 5 or more. I have seen them kept in singles though (and have myself) and they were fine... but supposively you don't get all the unique loach behavior unless they are in groups.

3. God... almost anything goes with clown loaches. I have seen them kept with anything from community tanks, american cichlids, african cichlids, arowanas. I myself have kept them with community fish and with american cichlids. And my aunt kept one with africans.

Clown loaches get big and should be kept in groups of five or more. They eventually should be housed in a 180+ gallon aquarium. Please read information in link before deciding to purchase them:

I disagree clown loaches should not be kept with most species; especially african cichlids!

Unless you plan on getting much bigger tank skip the clown loaches. A 55 gallon is not appropriate to keep them in for much more than a year.

Doesn't mean people don't

and doesn't mean people haven't and the clown loaches were just fine.

Don't care what an article says... people have and do keep loaches with africans...

Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should. It's funny that I never hear anyone talk of 20 year old clown in african cichlid tank.

I have a 55g tank with 3 clowns one is about 6in and the other are 3in had them for year and a half. They dont mess with any other tank mate. I would say 3 or more would be good in a tank they like to swim around together.

Mabel
06-11-2007, 9:30 PM
Do you think they would like Sand... i am thinking that the new 55 will have Sand in it, but not entirely sure about that. The clown Loaches intrigue me and I think I will have atleast 2 or three.

vito357si

Sand will work but they well dig and tear it up when they swim. They are fast and have powerful tails.

Clown loaches cannot live a full healthy life in a 55 gallon!

You can get other loaches that stay smaller and exhibit the same kind of fun behavior. I have Burmese Border loaches (also called Angelicus Botia and several other names) and they are a hoot.

Great advice! Botia Kubotai as they are known would be a much better fit for a 55 gallon aquarium.

Botia Kubotai are indeed cool, but they go for over $20 each in the ATL. Yo-yo's are cool, as are skunks (some folks say the skunks are too aggressive but I've never seen them be mean to anyone besides themselves). If you want clowns, I would get three clowns, but you just have to know that you will either need to upgrade your tank or give them away in a few years. I know they live 20+ years but who lives in the same place with the same fishtank for 20 years? If you don't buy them and take care of them, someone else will, and they are not as likely to be doing research and asking questions. There aren't that many people who have 200-gallon aquariums, and the ones who do are not likely to put five three-inch fish in there alone because in 20 years those fish can be a foot long. My loach tank is very crowded, but it is the biggest tank I can logically have in my house, so I spend time and money every week on excellent filtration, and my fish look happy.

loaches r cool
06-12-2007, 3:18 PM
My favorite loaches for a smaller tank would be Botia striata (Zebra loach) and Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki (dwarf loach). Your 55 is probably big enough for many of the medium size Botiine loaches but I often prefer to get a slightly smaller fish and more of them. Loaches(most of them) are much happier in large groups.

Here is some pics of my zebra's (click):

Hey, I am back! And I have found a Margarita, so let the fun begin.
I LOVE all the suggestions! I really like the Botia Kubotai Loaches they are SUPER Diffrent and I also likek the Botia Straiata Loaches.

Question: Could I maybe get 1 or 2 or each and would they exist together in harmony?
