hi,
i have a jewel vision 180,and am running the jewel built in filter, aswell as a tetratec ex700 external. I have just bought a hospital tank, and wondered if i could add another small hang on filter, somewhere in main tank,so i have it handy, when i need for hospital tank.I know i could use media from other filters for hospital tank, but it would be easier if i could just grab, little hob.
Could i overdo the filteration ?
There are other posts like this one, so read on for more opinions that may not post here.
It all depends on your setups and fish. However, in 90% of all cases, no, you cant overdo filtration. In fact, I do what you do, run a HOB filter on established tank that is intended for a QT (Quarantine Tank).
I recommend multiple filters incase one dies unoticed (I have seen it happed to people). Look at the GPH of your filters, I usually aim for 6-10x water turnover depending on the fish.
For example, if you house bettas in a small tank, most dislike lots of current. Things like that you need to consider.
Good Luck

As long as the tank doesn't turn into a whirlpool, then you should be fine. Just lower the filter output if it looks like your fish are struggling.

I think that's a really good idea.

You can add a sponge filter.Once it has been in a established tank for 2-3 weeks it will keep the hospital stable.Get one with a sponge capable of handling twice the size of the hospital.

Provided the flow isn't an issue, add all the filters you want.
As mentioned above, it is all flow and current. If the fish are comfy then you can't really overdo filtration. Plus have backups in case one filter goes down is a good idea.
I use a canister and HOB on my 29 gallon tank and the fish love the extra current.
