i just got a male betta today and housed him in a tank with 6 black tetras. The betta seem to be shy or scared? he would hide behind the plants and when he does come out he seems very lazy or tired. BUT he is jumpy, he would suddenly just sprint or dash around the tank..

Is the betta not comfortable with the tetras? Should i immediately move him to a personal tank or should i wait a day or two and see wat happens?

It could be a number of things...

Simply enough it could just be him getting use to his new (very LARGE) new home compaired to what he is use to!

Also, a real possibility could be the acclimation from his stale poor water in his cup into his new clean aquarium water. How did you acclimate him? Also what are the water parameters?

He should be fine around tetras, but remember they tend to get aggressive with long colorful finned fish...

I would not stress him further by moving him again.

i dipped the bag he was in into my aquarium water for about 10mins, then i poured in some of the aquarium water into his bag..(yes the water he was in was REALLY REALLY DIRTY) then finally i netted him out and placed him into the tank. Okay ill see what happens in a few days..

The tetras seem to be eating the betta pellets.. the tetras has amazingly big mouth.

mine did that too when i first moved him to the 20g. the next day he started swimming in front of glass like he didn't know what to do with himself. lol

Ours sat in the corner for about 4 days, now he swims with the other fish, i think its a shock to be in a bigger environment with other fish after being cooped up for who knows how long,.......:)

thanks for sharing.. =) ill see what happens tomorrow..

I wonder if a nipped fin will heal itself? I also noticed that the betta is fairly thin..is this due to starvation or due to its body structure?

Ours was thin also, once he got used to his new environment he fattened up nicely. The fin should heel by itself, do a few extra water changes, it does wonders..........:)

he is in his cave!!! he seems to be adapting to the tank well.. when i first got him in, i dont think he even noticed the cave there.. =) i hope everything goes well..

Betta's are also slower swimmers then other fish, something to remember. I have 6 Betta's at work!

how big is the tank...is it the 5.5g cube you were asking for stocking advice on in an earlier thread and is it cycled ? Is he getting any hassle from the tetras ?
