I will switching from freshwater to salt water in a couple of weeks. My big question is: Is it absolutely necessary to use a refugium or plenum with this setup?

Glad to hear that!!! I was reading up on a site(The Reef Web) which stated it was needed. That takes a big load off my mind...lol!!:D One more question though. I plan to get a skimmer soon for my wet/dry. Does anyone have any suggestions for a very inexpensive one that will do the job for my FOWLR 55gl.

You'll find that with the exception of a tank, salt and water, there are many things listed as 'required' that are not in fact mandatory for running a successful SW system.

There are many ways to care for a saltwater tank that were popular 10 years ago that are dying hard. New and better ways are being devised all the time. Probably in another 10 years us old timers will be fighting hard for the Berlin Method against the Galileo's of the future.
