Is there any list of common names with a reference to scientific names?
Perhaps is somebody out there who knows where to find one?
I know Aquaria Central is using common names on top of the species section and I have listed most of them already. However, it doesn’t seem to be enough to figure out what kind of fish you guys sometimes talk about.
I would be grateful to any suggestion.

Thanks; Jimmy

I just Google the common names if I don't know to what they refer. HTH,

However, Google always seems to send me to this site, so I would think that this would be your best bet: http://www.webcityof.com/mifftitl.htm

Hey, you can always ask us, too...we'd be happy to tell you if we know! :)

for cichlids i always refer to the scientific name just waaaay easier for identification. Theres just to many differnt common names for each fish. Becareful with the names here on AC alot of the scientific names are wrong (at least in the cichlid species list)

Me too, but on AC most members use common names.
And it's a hell of job sometimes to find their scientific names.
But it's fun to do (keeps me off the streets :D)
I've already listed 200 "common" names refering to their scientific names and visa versa(including a hyperlink)
So it's gonna be much easier for me to reply to a thread, knowing what kind of fish they'r talking about.
Thanks anyway

Although it can be a bit slow, fishbase is pretty good about using the standard common names. You can search with either common or latin name, and there's a good chance you'll find what you want.

I've been googeling most of it and they've send me once or twice to fishbase, so I've add it to my favorites.

Thanks, Jimmy

I couldn't agree more. It seems to me that depending on which store you goto and when you go, the bloody common names are different for the same fish. I have also found (and hate) that allot of stores group fish names by genus. IE: "oh that is an archocentrus." Ok an archocentrus what? then you get a smartass "IT"S AN ARCHOCENTRUS FISH!" along with a are you questioning my knowledge dumbass look.

Stick with the scientific names, trust me it will make your life allot easier.

aah but do they know thats most of the fish in the archocentrus group have been re-classified? it includeds the convict.. :D so now you can really confuse them scott.

Aikido, are we now talking about Cryptoheros for the Archocentros fish?

Yes, but, for some not all. the convict falls under the new name.

Juan Miguel sent this to me a while back
