I had to euthanize my goldfish today. I couldn't care for them and no one I knew or around me could care for them. My mom is having a big fit about it. How can I explain to her that I had to do it to end their suffering? Now she thinks I'm evil :wall: :wall: :wall:

UUUMMMM...explain to here that you bought a fish without knowing enough about it, couldn't care for it and killed it, then ask her for a puppy!!!

It was a present. She liked how they looked, so shes having a big fit.

tell her the goldfish had a tumor, or something else that sounds scary.

When I was a kid, thats what I told my mom when my goldfish developed swimbladder.

Tell her that it had a dangerous disease that could spread to humans and cannot be cured :D :(

Was that lying too much?

Why were they suffering?

Did your mom give them to you? If she did then I can understand why she had a fit.

If they were not sick then you should have gone the extra mile to find someone who could care for them like maybe the person who gave them to you.

I've had my eyes opened recently (with a cyber slap) by someone on these boards about our pets. They should not intentionally be subjected to any harm.

I agree with Que. I don't understand why they needed to be euthanized. Why couldn't you care for them? If your mom was having a fit, she probably would have done so or if the only option was to put them out, give them to your LFS so they'd at least have a chance.

I'm betting the poster is young, and good ol' Mom was the only one who could have driven to the LFS or helped place an ad in the paper to sell the fish. sometimes parents don't know best. euthanising the fish was extreme, but if the kid was trapped with these goldfish (how many? tank size? what exactly were the problems?) that he didn't choose to take care of, i see how it was an option to get rid of them.

Tell her that you got a bunch of fish that you knew nothing about, didnt feel like meeting their needs, didnt feel like bringing them to the petstore so you just killed them and went on playing on the computer.

I wish people would realise animals arnt toys, and that they have lives.

This is like the most dishonest thread ever lol.

Let's retitle it. "Ways to lie to your mom"

What's done was done, but ideally there was little suffering.

I have a little bit of an idea what the poster is going through. We euthanized ours before moving across the country - we simply didn't know that surviving the 1100 mile drive was possible without stress or damage, and we thought it was the best thing at the time, for the fish. We tried to do what we thought was best, even though it was incredibly upsetting.

In the future, a different decision might be made based on different knowledge. I think personally that was kinder than the many goldfish deaths suffered today by ignorance in doling them out irresponsibly. (Like at parties or fairs.) Who's to say if they were returned to the LFS, that they wouldn't have been sold to someone with a bowl to die a few days later anyway. These situations are very tricky.

You should tell her exactly what you're telling us, and the exact reasons you did it.

Did you read the whole thread? The goldfish were "gifts" from his mom - she gave the fish to the OP, but she was the only one who wanted them.

Animals aren't toys - you're right, but they should not be "gifts" either - people should choose to take responsibilty for other creatures, not have those creatures dumped on them by someone (let's call this person "Mom") who knows nothing about the fish except that they look pretty, and she thinks they would look good in the fishtank at home.

If someone gave me a dog, i would have an ad out in less than a week trying to get rid of it. No, I wouldn't kill it - as i said before, euthanasia was a drastic measure - but i'm sure the OP felt like there was no other choice. it seems like he never wanted the fish in the first place, Mom was unwilling to listen to him about the actual requirements of the fish, and without access to an LFS, craigslist (or permission to use those venues to get rid of the fish) he took the only option that he felt was still available. i know we haven't heard back from the OP, but maybe the fish were truly suffering.

wow, you gleaned alot of background information from this kid's 2 sentence post....;) bottom line is that the kid KILLED fish because he was lazy. Who knows why his mom gave him the fish. maybe the kid's a screwup and she thought it would teach him responsibility...nope, he wasn't interested. tell mom you don't want the fish...don't kill them and then tell her after the fact. his mother knows him better than we do.....

I think there is a lesson to be learned, and hopefully, a lesson has been learned and taken onboard by the thread op, for the situtation not to happen agian..

I cant state that some of the comments left on this thread were out of order or uncalled for, as i believe that in the most part, they were justified for the message to be said.

However, i think now that the point has been put across enough to the member, and anymore comments will just make this more personal. So, the flogging has been done and lets now hope the op or others who find themselves in a similar situation takes what has been said, and reads, listens and learns from the experience..

Thanks, enjoy your day.
