I just got and in the planning stages of a 29g, i noticed that the tank is wider and taller then say one of my 55's, well maybe not taller but diffently wider, is it possible to keep one texas cichlid already half grown in this tank? I feel the answer will be no, but i feel in love with this fish at my LFS.

not for any length of time.

yeah, it would be the only fish in there, with the possible exception of one cleaning crew fish,( small) oto, maybe, or are oto's only used in planted tanks? we have plans, actually made a first payment on a 75g, maybe i should wait and put him and anouther tank mate in that. what about dicus, what size do they get and where could i find one or two, as we have none locally? I need to research them first!

Discus are a shoaling species..in essence they should be kept in a school of 4 + fish.

calculate 10-15 gallons per fish.

you can keep them as singles or pairs but it isn't generally recommended.
look to get them from a reputable breeder.

I did'nt find a whole lot of info on discus, but your right aboutbeing a schooling fish and i dont have the room or the money, boy are they expensive! beautiful, but expensive.

shop around for them

you can find then as low as $15 EA or deals as low as 4-$50

I started with home bred cobal reds..some color varients will run more.

but you should have at least a 55 g tank for them.
young discus should be (but don't have to be) kept in a Bare bottom tank. with smalle water changes daily and multiple feedings.

good sight for general information about discus.
but take it with a grain of salt.

domestic discus are more hardy than they get credit for.

just make sure you have a large enough tank and be prepared to do some water changes.

if you keep young cichlids..the conditions are not much different.
I raise angels in the same conditions as discus.
I do 2 water change weekly in all my FW tanks and they are at least 30% per change.

I have hd few issues keeping discus(cobalt reds, pigeon blood and red/white diamonds)
