what would you suggest is better for a 50 gal fw, lightly planted tank? mag 350 $80 or ehiem 2224 for $100 @ drs foster & smith?

Eheim 2215 - slightly lower flow rate than 2224, but 2215 has DOUBLE the media capacity.

at BigAlsonline.com
2215 kit (w/ pads, media, & quick connect fittings) $109.99 (2217 kit just $10 more!)
2224 kit $154.99 (note the Drs. price does not include any media, Eheim makes very good media).

Can you tell I'm a big fan of Eheim classics?

The Mag 350 is rated for higher flow, but I doubt it will maintain it over as high a head as the Eheims will. They will also require more frequent attention & cleaning. They aren't bad, but you get what you pay for.

Curious..ever run a Mag 350? Why do they require more frequent attention and cleaning?

This part of your statement is totally :bs: IMO. I am going to assume you are ready to provide some kind of independent test results, why would it require more maintenance ?.....:)

The Mag 350 just doesn't hold as much media or offer as much SA as the well packed Eheim classic. This is where I get the notion that it will require more frequent cleaning - with less media/SA (depending on how it's setup), it should, in theory, clog more quickly - especially if it is pumping at a higher rate.

I have no first hand experience w/ the Mag, but I know a couple of people who have switched from Mag to Eheim and Eheims are more frequently touted than Mags (AFAIK). As to the statement about the Eheim's flow degrading less per unit of head pressure, just look at the impellors of each pump. It is not hard to see why I would expect the Eheim to maintain a greater proportion of its rated flow.

Flow rates and internal volumes were looked up at BigAlsonline.

I'm not trying to get the Mag lovers into a major snit over this, I'm just expressing an opinion here, and trying to back it up with some readily observable and/or documented design differences.

I think my Mag 350's put out a bit more noise than any Eheim would, but man they are powerful. It's not just the impeller size, but the magnet that runs it. You could separate iron from most solid state alloys with a Mag 350's mongo-huge magnet (that's a joke folks). At the least, I could drain a flooded basement with one. I have one that I cart around for aquarium vacuuming purposes due to its strong flow rate. Unlike most other systems, it will tolerate incredible amounts of air without breaking suction/siphon.

If an Eheim is like a BMW 5-series, then my Mag 350's are like my old late 60's Corvette. Not as refined, but lordy, gobs of horsepower.

I am planning on getting some smaller Eheim Ecco's for my smaller planted tanks, though.

thanks for all the input guys. another question, what do you guys think about bio wheels hooked up to a canister?

Its a good way to break up the flow......:)

thanks, that's just what i was thinking. i kinda like the sound of the water through the bio wheels. do you think bio wheels really work?

you shouldnt have bio-wheels in a planted tank. Even if you're not dosing CO2, the co2 beneficial to your plants produced by your fish will be gassed off when the water from the bio-wheel hits your tank surface.

IMO, an eheim 2215 will be plenty enough for your tank. it costs 100 dollars aswell and comes with a variety of media.
