I have an angel pair. I guess I just got lucky. Since they day I brought them home from the LFS they have swam together and been sweet on each other. They also are very sweet and tolerant to the other fishies in the tank which right now includes my community betta. I am putting a tank on layaway at my LFS soon. I would like to move my pair over to it and include some more angels. Would I just be setting myself up for disaster? Also, the BF is now in love with Bala sharks. I keep telling him that we have to have a BIG tank before we get any of those. What tank size is min for bala sharks? Could they be kept with Angels? Thanks for any info :)

What size tank are you planning on getting? Balas reach 14-15 inches and are very active. I'd think a 6 foot long tank would be necessary to house them, and it would need to be at least 18" wide...that's pretty big.

In a tank that sized, more angels would be fine. Actually, in a 4 foot or 5 foot long tank more angels would be fine as well. How big are your angels right now?

angels are actually a schooling fish..but when you add more you increase the chance of pair bonding(mated pairs form up)
in the large tanks..this is not a big problem as there is room for the pairs to wander off.

but in a 4-5' tank..you may see aggression..a pair can take over 1/2 the tank.

Well I was just thinking about a 65, but with the ol' BF wanting bala sharks.... I knew I would have to get bigger, I just didn't know how much bigger. Right now I think I am gonna have to talk him outta the bala sharks. Is there anything that looks bala sharkish without getting as big as bala sharks?? ;)

There are quite a few fish that I think are similar, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder...here are a few:

Siamese Algae Eater (not Chinese - big aggression difference)
Rainbow Shark
Red tailed black shark

The later two probably ought to be without others of their kind in a 65 - they can be aggressive with each other. SAEs are rather cool, will eat algae for you, and are not aggressive (in my experience at least) - he could get a trio of them easily.

Has the BF looked at Pictus catfish? They're a bit sharklike (although they have huge whiskers), cool looking, active, and would do great as a small group 3-4 in a 65.

I personally was thinking getting a pitcus or two myself. Aren't they pretty much like largerish cory cats?? ( What I mean is they eat debris, active, usually out during the day...) Course if he HAS to have a Bala shark it could be used as leverage for a 125gal ;)

Pictus are rather active during the day - especially if you have more than one. I guess they are a bit like largerish corys (I like largerish, neat new word) except they'll eat fry and neon sized fish. They're like have minature channel cats in your tank.

Welp, I am putting a 72 gal bowfront on layaway. Just went over there and picked it out. Thought having a "high" tank rather than a long tank will probably be better for angels. Who knows... If I ever get over my angel obsession and am feeling frisky I probably could fit a discus or two in it. Whadda think?? ;) 3 pairs of angels in a 72 bow??
