Hi all!

I'm looking to setup a nice and simple reef only tank. My primary focus is a large brain or two, and maybe some lr and a 1-2" sandbed. Also looking at oxypora, anyone have some experience they'd like to share?

I was thinking:
10 gallon tank
MH lights (wattage?)
live rock
brain coral
skimmer?
powerhead?

Thats it, no fish, no inverts, maybe a few snails for cleanup.

70 watt Metal Halide?

I was hoping the skimmer would eliminate the need for an hob or sump, but if it's wise, i can always throw a bunch of macros in the back/sides no problem.

Thanks,
B.W.

Open brain corals actually do quite well in more nutrient-rich water, and if you don't keep any fish you might not even need to use a skimmer.

They do need good water flow (not too strong and directly on them, though), so a powerhead would be good.

A 70W MH would be OK for this type of coral in such a small tank.

I would still consider the use of a sump - it would allow for easy topups and partial water changes, as well as being an excellent place to keep the heater. The increased volume of water would also result in a more stable tank, and that is always a good thing.
