there are many people out there with these power filters..
where have you found cartridges the cheapest? how have you modified old cartridges to save money?
i'm looking at reduced hours and a possible layoff at work, so saving $ is in my best interests. [and i have 3 400's now.]

I formerly would rinse the cartridges with a pressure spray (a garden hose with a sprayer attached) and could easily get 6 months or more use from a cartridge.
I've since abandoned them altogether. I cut Aquaclear 500 cartridges to fit the filter well of the Emp and use them instead. Easier to clean, longer lasting.... works well.

I use the cell-pore cart. in the front and filter floss in the rear baskets...I think the cell pore cart. are about 10 bucks each at big als,and a bag of filter floss is about 3 bucks.I clean my emp 400 every other month.I rinse the cell pore incerts in tank water and change the filter floss..the cell pore incerts will last for ever ,so after the first cost of 20 dollars it cost about 3 bucks every two years to maintain my emp400:D

I rinse the cartridges like JSchmidt every once in awhile. In the media baskets I have floss.
