I have a ten gallon tank that my son used to use for his hermit crabs that I want to use for a feeder breeding tank. I have a green terror, a pimodelus pictus and a striped raphael.

I still have some time to make some decisions, I need to build a stand for the aquarium and of course still have to cycle it.

I am having trouble deciding what to breed, I have narrowed it down to either guppies, platys or ghost shrimp. What do you guys think I would have the most sucess breeding and does anyone know where I can find a good guide on how to build an aquarium stand.

the aquarium is 20"X10" I didnt get a hieght measurement

I'd go with guppies.

Just using these as snacks? With any feeder, you'll be hard pressed to provide enough protien to support the carnivores, without setting up 2-3 rotating grow out tanks.

For a ten, I would go with no substrate, lots of floating plants. Use an internal sponge filter. Easy to clean, hideout for the babies in the plants. Have 4-5 females and 1-2 males.

Sorry man I just got done with the pirahna post and I was a little displeased and the thought of feeders wasn't my favorite topic lol, ok I breed my own in a 10 gallon and I use a small gravel substrate any really would be ok, I usually put in about 4 males and 10 or so females get the females pregant and then feed the males off. I then keep the females in a seperate 10 gallon. if you have a divider that works too. I heavily plant (fake) the tank and put floating plants on the surface since the fry swim straight to the surface when born and I collect as many fry as possible before the mothers can retrieve them as a snack usually I can get about a hundred or so babies from all of the females combined. and I just keep doing that over and over every 6 months or so:) Just make sure you keep 4 males and about 10 females out of the fry batch once matured.

EDIT: or you can just go the more simple route such as oriongirl provided hehe.

snacks was my intention, I currently feed cichlid pellets, flake, shrimp pellets, earthworms, and I have fed them ghost shrimp....

does anyone have any experience breeding ghost shrimp? are they cannibalistic? are they difficult to breed?
