View Full Version : Sick Cory

I got up this morning to a sick cory. He was lying upside down on the bottom, dead I thought since he wasn't moving. When I went to net him out, he tried to swim away, but was unable to hold himself upright. I decided to euthanize him and get it over with. I have new fish in my quarantine tank, so no place to put a sick fish at the moment.

The only problem I've had with this tank so far is I euthanized one neon tetra a couple of weeks ago. I highly suspect he may have had NTD, he had a large spot of his red stripe that was faded away, although he wasn't acting sick yet. So far the other tetras look fine, other than one whose red stripe is a little lighter color than the rest, but it's been that way for awhile with no noticeable change. It has no bare spots like the other neon had, the entire stripe is evenly faded on both sides.. Would that be NTD for sure? or is it somewhat common for some not to be quite as brightly colored as others? If it's possible it's NTD, I probably need to euthanize him as well? (**** I hate that part)

Back to the cory, no idea what made him sick. He didn't have anything noticeably wrong with him. Color was good. I have one other cory that's not quite as active as normal now, so I fear he may be sick as well. Can the cories get NTD?

I'm setting up a 10 gallon that was planned for another purpose, but seems it'll end up being a hospital tank instead. I've had the sponge from it in my filter for several days now and I can take a scoop of gravel from my main tank as well, will this be enough to cycle it possibly? I figure I'm better off moving the suspect sick fish out of the main tank regardless. I can do daily water changes on the hospital tank also.

What, if anything, should I do with the main tank? Should I do any type of treatment? I'm thinking of feeding them medicated flakes only for a week or so and doing some extra water changes, don't want to do anything drastic. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I realize this post is rather old but it never got a response, cories can't get NTD. However as long as the neon didn't die in the tank and get eaten by any of the other fish they'll be fine. They spores from NTD get released into the water when the sick fish dies, then the other fish either contract it through eating the fish or eating fish matter from the dead fish.
