a "plastic tub" isn't a good idea for a raised pond. the plastic isn't designed to with stand the elements as well as a drop in barrel liner or flexible liner specifically made to be used for ponds....

Sorry to hear about your koi Halcyon_Diver. A Raccoon had raided my pond about a month ago. Just this weekend a raccoon raided my LFS. They now have a game trapper taking care of business!. I now have a cover over mine, well sort of a cover. It's rebar that is layed down where concrete/cement is going to be poured for sidewalks and drive ways. I got it at the home depot. I used the same stuff on my 1/2 barrel ponds, i just cut them to size and bent the edges over the sides. keeps the varmints away from within reach of the water.

I don't think a 2' x 2' "pond" is enough water for a RES. They get pretty darned big. I've read that they need at least 10G per inch of expected adult size which is around 10" - 12" long/round.

They also make the plastic ones too. You can find them used at farm auctions. Check with your local Feed & Supply stores for where you might get a used one.

Around here, they cost about the same as a new aquarium, half the size of the trough. Saw one -180g - for about $200 here.

But, are they safe to sink in the ground? or would they need to be an above ground pond?
