I am new too - but I will attempt some advise (take with caution). Look at the directions on your salt. Mine is 1/2 cup per gallon. But ALWAYS check and verify with at least a Hydrometer. At least that is what I do.

Oh, I went with the advice of others here to and get a powerhead and heater and mix/heat for two days so the temp and salinity are the same as your tank.

All the measurements you need for measuring out your salt should be written on the box/tub/packet that the salt came in....For instance, for me, i used Reef Crystals, and that worked out at 330g of salt per gallon of water ( UK weights and measures )....

The advice above, by Aries is good, and should also be noted, about having a powerhead and heater in the mixing container. I ran mine for 48 hours before being used for a wahter change. This helps to ensure its mixed correctly, the temp is the same as the tank, and the SG is the same as the tank...

Hope that helps

Do you have a hydrometer or refractometer? I would recommend buying one if not. Then you can measure the exact amount you have in the bucket...besides the fact that I'm assuming you're not filling the bucket to the brim.

i use redsea salt and it works out at 1kg per 30ltrs

Instant ocean for me (used to use seachem marine, also had good luck but $$). I've found that with the empty kitty litter buckets I use two and 3/4 scoops with a 1 cup measuring cup will hit consistantly at 1.024 (which is where I keep my tank). I still check with a hydrometer before adding but so far I havent had to adjust in quite a while!

I do mine the lazy way. I just chuck several jugfulls in checking with a refractometer every now and then, leave it to mix and warm for 24-48 hours, check with refractometer again, adjust if needs be and use. One thing I will point out, you can add the salt and mix it, test with a refractometer and it could be a perfect mix but then when it's had a few hours to mix and heat the SG goes up. Hence why I always test again before adding to my tank.
