hi i just recently setup my new second 55 gallon aquarium as a south american setup. in my tank i have two jack dempseys one male convict cichlid and an albino channel catfish. I was wondering because at the time when i bought my dempseys i didnt remember the sex differences and got a male and a female and the question is if the decide to get it on and have a humungoid amout of babies will my channel cat eat the babies, because it sounds cruel but if they had babies i want something to eat them because i dont want a small population of dempseys in my tank beacause 55 gallons is the largest i can get because of my mother.:help:

I wouldnt be worried about that you can always net em up and sell em or give em away... the thing i would worry about is the channel cat i have had an albino before and they grow super fast and he will break your 55gal tank ez... i speak about this from experience mine was about a foot and a half long after one year (started at 3 inches) and he would splash water on the wall everynight and ended up breaking the glass in my 75 gal tank...

I would advise to lose the cat, it can easily break that tank.

^ darn straight.

they get up to 25 - 30 inches according to planetcatfish.com...and weigh in proportionately

i know i have a 12,000 gallon koi pond i will release him in whaen he gets about a foot but my cat is fairly docile he is somewhat tame he is very smart he knows who i am when i walk in the room for some reason he is somewhat diurnal i think that is wierd for a catfish in all but he does have MANY hinding places but there like best friends with the jack dempsey the convict is a loner but they never fight

I HAD 2 ALBINO CHANNEL CAT THAT I BOUGHT AT ABOUT 4 IN. and they got to about a 7in. in a months and it swallowed a 5in. goldfish then spit back out. i still have the goldfish but it lost an eye to the CHANNEL CAT.
i then put my channel cats in my 300 gallon pond,
went to india for a vacation,
came back,
no mare channel cats in the pond

Don't worry about the fry, if the Dempseys don't eat the babies, the other fish should.
I had a pair of Dempseys for a while who mated ALL the time, and they would eat the massive cloud of fry within a week. (Lots of protein lol)
