I have City water and am at the mercy of the system. just recently they upgraded the local main pipe. since then there seems to be more clorine, more silicates and now there is a slight rust problem.
so every time I change water I get a very minor ich, fungus... break out and the more water I change the worse the problem.
MAJOR FRUSTRATION No water change at all, very bad; some water change, a little bad; more water change More Bad!!!!!

Also the taste was bad enough that it is hard to drink

Enter the Eureka moment. my wife used to drink coffe and we still have lots of coffe filters. we also have two glass gallon jars so I use a rubber band to hold the filter on the jar and let the tap dribble in the filter. it takes half an hour or so to fill the jar but it tastes so much better and I have done one water change with the filtered water and the existing disease has about half disapeared w/o meds

I do want to get a comercial water filter but for now the coffe filters seem to be doing enough

Check the inline systems that you can pick up from a big-box store--Home Depot and the like. These will usually work for the specific problems you've indentified, and are easy to install in most houses. There are a variety of filter options, so make sure to get an insert the hits all the big ones--iron, silicates, phosphates, and some of the bacteria. Then install it on a faucet where you can easily draw water for changes, in addition to drinking water. Pretty easy and cheap, and while it is not the same as having RO, will work for many people.

If i owned the house I would look into the supply line type system. but I don't even own a vehicle so that is a bit of a strech. I have wanted a filter for some time but the water was survivable and other things warrented the money. I just was not prepared for the water to get so much worse. so this is a case of finding a way to improve things from even before and not cost me a thing for a time.

the other thing is there is not a national branded big box store in town besides Sears. I work there so I know what they have. I have not tryed to see what the local stores might have in this backwater town.
