How to make a divider?

How do i make a homemade divider that would allow flow but not fisht to go through.

This is for afican cichlids so i will need it to be sturdy!

They at least a little over 3 inches.
 
Maybe that plastic grid eggcrate stuff?
 
i bought a sheet of 1/4" acrylic from home depot, cut it to fit in my tank, and then drilled a bunch of 1/4" holes in it spaced 2" apart. it works great and extremely strong. plus it looks nice because its clear. i buried the bottom of it in the gravel and then zip-tied it through a couple holes on the top of it to the top cross brace on my tank.
 
Embroidery matts.
 
acrylic dividers work great, but its a lot of effort. You could use some dense nylon netting from the craft store and attach it to the sides with suction cups.
