hey guys, i have a mag 350 that im gonna set up on my sw tank, for at the very least extra water flow. They pump 350 gph so i figure i gotta get at least those gallons per hour outa this extra filter.

Im wondering if i should use it for anything else.... it comes with mechanical as well as biological and chemical filtration set-ups. I would not run the chemical on a daily basis, more when i have to take something out of the tank is when id like to run carbon. But im wondering if it would be a good idea to run either the biological (for even more on top of the LR) or the mechanical (to take out unwanted things in the column). ?

Just wondering if i could get some more use than just water flow out of this unit? I have the same question with my other filter that im using for added flow, an emperor 400. Im going to take off the bio-wheels i believe, but would it be good to maybe have things like phosban and such in the media chamber of the emperor and use them as needed?

being still pretty new to salt water, im not really to sure my self, it seems like pretty much the general consensus is to keep just LR and a skimmer. But i see people who set up successful marine tanks without even any live rock! I think to myself well, how do they do that... they must use either a canister or a wet/dry filter. I suppose they could use a sump, and keep LR in there... but why not have it in the tank too if its in the sump? and what sump is big enough to have 1.25-2 lbs of LR per gallon?

Im just thinking that maybe it would be good to use both methods???

Any thoughts?

no one has any thoughts!?!?

there is no reason why you cant use it to provide extra mechanical or chemical filtration for the system...As long as maintenance is always kept in mind..

Its just going to be down to personal preference, personally i dont like having filters on the tank. But, yes, there are many that ONLY have filters on their marine tanks and no live rock..

Either way works, and its the tank owners choice which way "they" percieve to be best...

Good luck and let know what you decide to do...

heh i'll probabably still end up using it just for flow, and maybe carbon usage as needed... but besides that probably not anything but flow. I feel that LR is better, but i want to see what other people think, cause it seems like filters are always looked down upon in a SW system.

I could see using it to run carbon, phosphate remover, etc. However, any reasonably priced powerhead (larger MJ or a medium Korilla) will be just as useful (if not more useful) for providing more flow, while also consuming less electricity.

yes, i also am running 3 maxi-jet 1200's in the tank. As well as an extra aquaclear 30 and an emperor 400 filtrartion system.

I'm running filters (2 Rena Smart Filter 55's) on my new 75g, as well. They come with three 4-sided cartridges per filter. Each side/sleeve contains Bio-chem zorb. That's a total of 24 mechanical + chemical filtering sides! It also comes with the Bio-chem stars for bio-filtration, but I removed them and filled the space with Purigen pouches instead. Anyone see any problems with running these filters strickly to filter particulates out and to remove organic impurities from the water as long as I keep them clean? There will be plenty of LR and sand in the tank itself for bio-filtration. Sorry to hi-jack but felt it was relevant to this thread.
