So the tank is coming along quite nicely. I removed the Mono, who sadly died earlier today, and will be removing the other odd ball fish that are mixed in there to put in my 20 when I have the energy to chase them around. Besides possibly adding a few more rocks, I would my new set-up is completely done. Hope you enjoy the pics!

I will post some as soon as I can, I actually moved him to the 20 as we are switching the 33 to brackish water. But hes a good hider and its quite hard to catch a good shot of him, I will try to get one for you tonight or tomorrow though.

Nice and colourful.

Keep an eye on the Savini and Firemouth, as it's generally not recommended to keep American cichlids with African cichlids, mainly due to differing aggression levels.

I think they are yellow labs rwilliams. nice tank mike. I agree with not mixing american cichlids and africans.

MikenDanielle

Yeah, they are yellow labs,

boomerjr91 - I know there are some tht are not supposed to be in there, but i think the previous owner has them completely acclimated to these settings. There was also a mono in there and I took him the day after getting the tank and put him alone in a 33G and he died within 24 hours. Now im worried to take anymore out.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, appreciate them.

Hey man, got that pic of that lobster yet?

MikenDanielle
07-09-2007, 1:00 PM
This is all I got so far, I took this one out of focus pic then he took off into the rocks again, and then my batteries died, but they are charging. I did notice he is a deformed lobster and only has 1 pincer on him. Anyone know if this will grow back ever?

I think you're ok since they haven't killed each other yet, probably due to the caves and natural hideouts.

MikenDanielle
07-09-2007, 1:32 PM
Yeah I couldnt beleive the guy I bought it from didnt have a single cave in the tank. The closest thing he had was some sea shells, and very few of them. With the caves in there now they seem to be much happier and showing excellant colors.

your orange ones are orange leleupis I think.

MikenDanielle

Thanks! Ill add them to my list, won't let me put them in my sig though, says it is now too long. O'well.

it also looks like your blue ones with yellow fins might be acei cichlids.

boomerjr91
07-09-2007, 1:50 PM
all this is on liveaquaria

MikenDanielle
07-09-2007, 1:52 PM
I was thinking they may be acei's from looking on liveaquaria myself, but I couldn't find any pics of acei with the black vertical stripes mine have. Is this something they may develop as they age?

boomerjr91

also looks like you have an electric blue. I would think they would. the liveaquaria pic has theirs purple and it looks like darker purple stripes on them.

I may be wrong but I think this is a Firemouth.

MikenDanielle
07-13-2007, 3:37 PM
I know I am going against popular views here but I added some live plants to tank. Just 2, 1 Echinodorus x barthii and 1 Anubus barteri. I am well aware the cichlids will probably eat them, but I figure best case scenerio they survive, worst case scenerio the cichlids get some good vegetable in their diet. As of now they have been in there for over an hour and no fish have even nibble or payed much attention to them... I have my fingers crossed. Also added a new background, will post pics later.

Yes, that's a firemouth. It doesn't really belong with African cichlids, as its temperament and dietary needs are quite different from all those Mbuna. I didn't see a leleupi anywhere in those pics. Live Aquaria doesn't have a great selection of African cichlids, so IMO it's unlikely you'll find all the info you need to ID your fish. That purplish one with the yellow fins looks more like cynotilapia afra "cobue" to me than Ps. sp. Acei. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1371
Still, it looks a little different than that, so maybe it is a hybrid?

MikenDanielle
07-13-2007, 3:58 PM
Yeah sadly, I think there are a few hybrids in there, I know alot fo them did come from the LFS which I would be quite sour if they were selling hybrids, but, I am positive there are some hybrids in there.

LFS's sell hybrids all the time. That's pretty much all you find in the "mixed African" tanks.

I am using an aquaclear 500, 2 HOT Magnum's and a powerhead with a filter accessory on it.

Really?? Thats so sad that even fish stores would sell hybrids, arnt they severly looked down upon by "serious" cichlid people?

severum mama
07-13-2007, 4:54 PM
Generally. But those aren't the people that are buying them, ya know? Personally, I don't have a problem with it as long as they are not sold as pure species to unsuspecting customers. The cichlid aficionados often order from breeders anyway, or at least stay away from the "mixed" tanks.

MikenDanielle

Loved the way the plants looked so much I went and got a couple more. I added a Java Fern and an Echinodorus x barthii. All still doing very well. I am of course only trying this as the potted plants at the lfs are on sale for $3.88 each as opposed to their normal price of $8 each.

On the lobster, the claw will not grow back. But he will do fine, if he does not have to catch his own food(live fish). I have seen others with no claws and they do fine. But as you know they do get big so watch out.

the lobster claw doesn't grow back...... talking some doo doo there mate.... i have two blue lobster that lose there skin or shell or whatever this includes claws.... lobsters are so cool its the never ending quest to catch a fish ten times the size of it that makes me smile.... so don't worry he'll grow hiself a new claw

danikagrace, what you are discribing is molting. Completely different from loosing an apendage. It is possible to regrow the claw, but may not happen. BTW this is an old thread.
