On one of my small 15w light strips designed for my 10g tank, the buzzing is VERY loud. A small, quiet buzzing is normal. One like my 15w light is.. well wrong. Im waiting to replace it with quality, high wattage lights though.

your never alone with flo lighting. And a properly running flo light will make no audible sounds that can heard unless your ear is on the fixture. You might be having conection probs (dirty-coroded bulb holders) the starter or bulb also might be the culprit.

I think we are talking about the differences between magnetic and electronic ballasts. Electronic costs more but allegedly does not buzz.
There is also a grade rating on the older magnetic ballasts - based on noise production, higher grade, lower noise.

Did you check to see if you've got any bees trapped under there?

electric ballasts have noise ratings also.

Thats exactly what causes it, I have bought many flo bulbs not just for my fish tanks but even for my car garage and it seems once the connectors get rusted or corrected a sparking occurs (Kinda like on a car when the spark plugs get corroded). Just get a new bulb, but heres another thing. Make sure to check out the bulb before you buy. I have even seen cases of where there is rust on the connectors and it was brand new in the LFS due to moisture and humidity. So always be sure to double check, a little quick yet not longterm tip to getting rid of that buzzy noize is using a fine piece of sandpaper/or brush with tips to remove the rust and so on...
