i was down the LFS today and i seen 3 tiger oscars in a tank they were only about 2 inches maximum, they were looking a bit lighter in colour, more grey colour or very light brown.
1. is this just because they are little?
2. will they get alot darker when older/bigger?
thanks howard
Most fish seen in lfs do not show the actual coloration and are more often very pale.

I have had oscars for a while ranging from 2" to 10". The thing is the colour does change as they grow, depending on the food given, but its not a very drastic change. However, it also depends on the quality of the fish in the first place. To be on the safe side, ensure the lil ones are as close to your expectations as possible befor buying. This is in my experience.take care

how long would it take after i got it home to from the LFS would it change to its real colour? i have seen other oscars and i had 2 before which were about 6" each and were really dark also i have seen oscars about 10" in LFS which are really dark.

Oscars turn grey when they are stressed. I'd bet if you got those little ones and put somewhere they feel secure they would turn black again in a hurry.

ok so i really want to buy this now, do you think it would be ok for me to grow it up to about 5" in my 30g which has nothing in becuase im worried if it goes straight in the 125g it will probably be bulliedby the bigger fishprobably to death. i will get it today if you agree with the 30g thing.

The 30 is a little tight for two at 5", if just one, it can be done but keep up on water changes and an excellent diet.

also what would you say is an excellent diet?
New Life Spectrum is great food as is Hikari BioGold +. Also, Dianichi is good if you can find it. I also throw in some brineshrimp, beefheart and Krill. Its best to try and vary their diet if you can. If you must feed only one food, make it a high quality pellet food like the ones I first mentioned.
