Hi all,

:help:

Just joined the site and after a bit of advice.
I have a Jewel 260 tank (260 litres) with 2 x actinic 40w tubes and 2 x marine 40w tubes. Internal jewel filter (part of the tank), plus external eheim professional filter. Standard protein skimmer which is doing an excellent job and 2 heaters.
I purchased a Mali anemone about 4 or 5 weeks ago which opened out fully within 24 hrs of being in the tank. It is near the bottom of the tank near the sand and is attached to a rock. I presumed it was happy there as it has not moved. During the day it is more or less fully expanded and looks fine but towards the end of the afternoon/early evening it shrivels up to quite a small size. I know anemones do this on a regular basis to get rid of stale water etc but mine seems to be doing it every day. when I bought it the chap in the store said it had eaten about 2 days previously but since I have had it I have tried feeding it with lancefish, shrimp etc but it will not take anything so it hasn't eaten anything in about 4 or 5 weeks.
I do regular water tests and all levels, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonia, copper etc are fine. I do regular 10-15% water changes with RO water every 2 or 3 weeks.
I have about 5 or 6 hard coral including a PLate coral, 4 or 5 soft coral and an assortment of mushroom colonies which are all doing fine. So much so that most of my corals are now spreading and colonizing the surrounding rocks.
I also have a large bubble tip anemone which is twice the size it was when I got it, is healthy and feeds regularly. It does retreat into the rock work occasionally, only to come out in through a different opening in the rocks.
After that lengthy explanation, can anyone tell me why my Mali anemone won't feed and why it looks so ill some of the time only to open out again and look healthy.
I don't want it dying on me and polluting the rest of the tank.
I also have 1 tomato clown hosted by the bubbletip and 2 common clowns who have yet to discover the Mali anemone.
Thanks

Hi and welcome!

What are your water parameters? What kind of lighting do you have? If you purchased it 4 or 5 weeks ago it should be feeling comfortable in your tank by now. Just wondering if there's something in the water it may dislike.

Lighting is with 2 x actinic 40w fluorescent tubes and 2 x marine 40w fluorescent tubes. Internal jewel filter (part of the tank), plus external eheim professional filter. Standard protein skimmer which is doing an excellent job and 2 heaters.
Water parameters are all within limits, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonia, copper, ph, salinity etc. I use 3 different test kits to make sure levels are correct, my hydrometer is brand new and I do regular 10-15% water changes with RO water every 2 or 3 weeks.

I don't think you have enough light for your nem and if you want to keep them you'll need to upgrade. They are high light creatures. For now you can try moving the rock to the top of the rock closer to the light.

Your lighting is not strong enough to support a nem in my opinion, you really need at "least" double that ammount for the nem to be successfull and thrive as it should do..

This is of course my personal opinion, not neccesarily the majority opinion..

I thought I had enough lighting for the anemone as I have a large bubble tip anemone that is about 6-7 inches across when fully expanded and it is extremely healthy and doing well.
I moved the Mali anemone higher up the rock closer to the light and into more water flow, that was 2 days ago and since then it is doing very well, fully open and hasn't closed up once, - yet. :)

So it seems that some of you were right in that I possibly don't have enough light so I think I shall be upgrading my lighting very soon.:iagree:

Thanks for all your help and comments :worthy:
