One of my yellow auratus cichlid has turned from bright yellow to dark brown it seems perfectly happy and active why is it brown
 
some cichlids change to darker colors when they are preparing for breeding. although i'm not sure if this is the case with this particular species do some research it may be the case.
 
he does change during the water change he was yellow now the next day he is dark brown he seems happy
 
If he's a male he will gradually lose more and more of the gold colouration and become predominanly black/brown & white striped with golden trim at the borders.

Changing colours slightly after a water change isn't unusual.
