Hi I just joined this forum and yours was the first post i read. I have a fish exactly like the one you pictured and it was sold to me me by a very dependable dealer who ID it as a Red top zebra (Pseudotropheus sandraracinos) Hope this helps...

No way thats a zebra.

Peacock all the way, Id say Aulonocara Maleri or Baenschi

That's an Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi, male.

First, awesome fish!

Second:
DeRo316 is dead on...

I can say with 99% certainty that you either have a

Aulonocara sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri"
or
Aulonocara Baenschi

To me, it looks a Baeneshe(or Benga) to me, if for no other reason, they're a lot more common than Maleri:

The difference is in the shape of the forehead. Study the two and see which you have.

There is no way that this is a "jacobfreibergi" and even less of a chance of a Red Top Zebra(which is a Mbuna! and the name is actually Metriaclima pyrsonotos)

It looks like a good stock of fish... my Benga peacock is not as nice as yours. They'll only look MUCH better.

is it the guy in the middle of the first picture and on his own in the second ?

that's a couple of jacobfreibergi - the very distinct white trim on the fins is a good indicator; if your's have this then that's what I think it is.

IMO its still not a jacobfreibergi.

I have a jacobfreibergi otter point and the mouth on the jacobfreibergi is more round than that on a Baenschi or Maleri, the forehead is also a little more flat. Plus the tail seems to be to yellow to be on a jacobfreibergi which usually fades out by the tip.

yes, they guy in the middle, and both actually, in the bottom. I've checked the profiles for A. Baenschi and A. sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri" and I'm goin with Baenschi. Forehead, eye position (seems to sit a little higher on Baenschi), dorsal fins, all a match. But they do have the white fin lining, not VERY distinct, but there. More obvious on larger. I'll repost in a few months when they get a little more size and color so keep an eye out!

For the time I do agree it's not a Jacobfreibergi, who knows though, I could be wrong!

...And doesn't belong with the M. Auratus certainly

It is not any type of Jacobfreibergi. They are multi colored like the otter points, malawi butterfly, Eurekas etc...

I have found that the Bengas have more blue streaks in their tails than the Maleri. I doubt that that is a sure way to tell. There are a few types of Maleri and they all look somewhat different depending on where they come from in the lake.

there are two fish in question...pic one second fish from the left, 'facing' the camera (the yellow headed guy) = baenchi...pic one first fish 'side on' to the camera = not one imo
