I've been building a shelf that will be in my 15g tall, that will essentially be a land mass... with plants etc. The shelf is fully removable, and will be even after it's planted. it sits on 4 tabs that suction cup to the sides of the tank in a corner. as part of my testing, I have had the empty shelf suctioned to the DRY tank. after about 2 weeks, 1 cup fell off, and the shelf fell...

I assume the cups will have way more holding power if applied in wet conditions, and kept wet by the tank water... but maybe I need better suction cups. does anyone have an opinion on wet vs. dry suction strength? also, does anyone know where I can find suction cups that are rated for weight?

I have no idea on the suction cups. Have you thought about putting a ledge on each wall/corner of the aquarium for the platofrm to sit on, instead of using suction cups? I assume that if you use silicon glue it will be able to be scraped off if you decide to change up the tank.

You could look at the new magnetic suction cups that are out there to help you. They have a magnet on both sides rather than adhereing via suction

I've never had sucess with suction cups in my tanks...that is...when making a ledge. I tried that once...couldn't get it to work after many many times and gave up. I'd like to do a slate ledge though...that'd be cool. Why couldn't you do that? Put 2 pieces of slate, lengthwise then one on top (or whatever, you're going to use, then move it up and down by putting things underneith the "legs" of the stand?

well, I have a bag of slate chips I bought for this, as well as a small piece of 1/2" slate... but I reeeeeeeeallly want to be able to remove this from time to time to avoid a major filth problem... the one thing I hate about my current paludarium is that the driftwood is so large that I rarely remove it... and when I do I have to take off the lights and shut off the filter. I'm really hoping for a suction cup solution to work.

I got the branches today... I'm almost ready to build! all I need is some window screen... and to decide on the final method of suction.

silicon on a magnetic strip to your ledge, then on the outside of your tank have another magnet...sorted ?? could use this method ALONG with the suction cups to give a really strong hold, the magnets could even go along the back of the tank so they would not even be seen?

woth a shot i think

Underwater, I'm guessing the suction cups will hold much better, as the piece of slate will weigh less.

You'll still need some kind of support here to hold up the slate.
