Hey all,

Thanks for your replies :)

I bought some play pit sand and now am in the process of washing it. I will try it in one of my smaller aquariums to see how it goes. I would like to see how the plants and fish do with it, plus keeping it clean. Thanks again!

plants generally do not do well in strictly sand as it gets compact and has no nutrient value.

yes, also with a small (1mm, 2mm) natural gravel rock, then the sand. Reason is dividing it makes it not a compact for plant roots to grow..
