There are smaller and larger O rings. Currently I have larger rings, however I thought about switching to the smaller ones because the current rings create many unused gaps in the filter cartridge. What do you think?

In general, I think O-rings should fit snugly. If you have lots of gaps, then I'd expect they're too big and try smaller ones.
But then again I'm not really sure what you're talking about. You might get better feedback with a little bit more detail. Could you describe the filter and how the O-rings fit in? Did the rings come with the filter?
