could you keep this fish by itself in a 55 gallon tank, it seems reasonable if the fish only grows to 9 inches. Sometimes the suggested tank sizes on this site seem unreliable or counter-intuitive.

I've never seen a bursa get to 9" in any aquarium. The largest I've seen was around 6". It should be perfectly fine as a single fish in a 55.

if the fish would only get to 6", would it be acceptable to put in other fish? I am thinking about an eel.

oh, what about the Humu Rectangle? http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=255

have you seen rectangles that are as large as 1ft?

I wouldn't put any more than 3 fish that get to be about the same size.
