I'm pretty happy with my Green Terror so far. Colorful and personable.
Those new umbees will keep your tank colorful...and active!

I know a GT can liver comfortably in a 55g. As for the Jaguar, well, I did not keep mine long enough to see his final size. I can only follow the recommendations given for the Jaguar as far as tank size.

A 55 gal will last a green terror for probably over a year or maybe 2. Their growth slows down once they hit about 6" or so, but they will end up up to 9" for females and 11-12" for males...so a 72 or 75gal tank would be better for full grown adult fish.
The umbriferus (umbee) or the managuense (jaguar) would outgrow a 55 rather quickly. The min for a jag would be maybe 90gals or so... or more...and probably over 125 (maybe 150-180) for the umbee.
And for dbcb314's pick of a wolf...which is the dovii cichlid, I would probably guess at a massive 180+ tank (they get HUGE)

If only one cichlid is allowed -- Discus are out, since they like others around.. I'd have to pick the common Red Tiger Oscar. They have nice color when fed a variety, and they have a unique personality. Yes, it's true...a personality...

I think I would be in major trouble. There is no way I could choose one or give up the ones I have.
I have 2-oscars, jd, 4-severums, 2- convicts,2- firemouths,
2 kribs, 2-green terror There is no way I could make a decision like that.
Sorry...

I'd go with a single Oscar, though my single Spilurum will be nice once I get the tank ready for him!

My favorite Cichlid is Altolamprologus calvus. I love the look of A Calvus. Especially when adult. Don't have a pic since I only have 2 little baby guys. Anyway, that is my favorite cichlid.

My personal choice, if I could only have one cichlid, would probably be a crenicichla xingu, the orange pike. I had one that I raised to about 8" total lenght. I took my time in letting it make the transition from feeder guppies to eating Jumbomin, DoroRed, and Krill. I had to give it up the same time I gave up the Calvus and Compressiceps. I came back to the petshop a couple of weeks later and they had it in a big display tank. But somethings was wrong with its mouth. It seemed like the flesh inside the mouth was tore up, almost like it was minced. I wanted to take her back so badly, but I had already gotten rid of the big tanks.
I love Cichlids but haven't really had a lot of experience with them. However I guess I would say a green severum if I had to only have one. I'm partial to them I guess since I got two of them yesturday. If not the severums probably an oscar, I've always loved those!
