I have a Magnum HOT Filter sitting around that I'd like to use on a 30 gal planted tank rather than having to buy another filter for it. It came with a bio-wheel, but I can't find it now and from what I've read a bio-wheel isn't the best choice for a planted tank anyway.

The Magnum canister only has one container inside to hold filter media, which contains carbon right now. I'm wondering if I'll be able to maintain a large enough bio filter in a planted tank without having any bio media in my filtration system? Or should I consider replacing the carbon with some type of bio filter media instead? Or should I just stick it back in the closet and buy another filter all together? :)

I thought about adding a sponge filter to provide a boost to the bio filter, but having never used one I'm not sure if they would be too bubbly and end up causing too much surface disturbance.

emm. I cant help you with this, but if you decide to get a new filter, I'll buy the magnum from you. (instead of sticking it back in the closet)

I think your filter should be fine. In a heavily planted tank bio filtration is not usually a large concern as long as your plants are growing well they will take care of this.

I have had a HOT Magnum on my tank for close to six years now. I used to use the carbon, but now I fill it with polyester floss and use as a mechanical filter - I bought it at Walmart in the sewing section for about $5 and that was four years ago :). This won't get you much bio-filtration, but you mentioned adding a sponge filter and that would be great.

I have a regular magnum running on one of my tanks loosely filled with floss I alsp picked up at Wal-mart. But, I put a foam block for an AQ 300 over the intake. This does two things, it cuts down on filter maintenance since less large particles are getting to the filter media. If you are looking for biofiltration, it also provides some space for the bacteria to colonize like the air driven foam filters. In fact, adding the foam to all my intakes has cut my filter maintenance seemingly in half. I clean my filters about once a month.
