Bellevue Oh
today i am gettin just 1 betta for a 10gal tank i was just wondering would like 3-4 neon tetras go good with them? its a starter tank for my little girl who is 6. would that be over stocked or good

I had a betta that pecked the eyes out of a few neons...dunno how it ever caught them, but it did. I have white clouds in with another betta, and they do fine, both the normal and the gold ones.

Actually, I'd go with a school of 7. You have the room for that many in a 10-gallon and neons prefer a large shoal over a smaller one. Yup, 6-7 neons, a pretty male betta, and maybe a brig's apple snail or two to keep the tank bottom tidy and add visual interest and you'll have yourself a real nice and interesting tank. :)

EDIT: I do agree with Marinemom, though... some bettas are okay with other fish and some aren't. It's usually better to get the neons first and then add the betta. You can still pull it off in an afternoon. Just take the betta out, rearrange the tank, acclimate and add the neons, and then add the betta back in. He may chase them around a bit for a few days and then he should settle down.

Depends on the betta. Some like company and other prefer to be alone.

Yup, depends on the betta. I had my betta with a trio of fancy male guppies for a while, which is supposed to be an absolute no-no, but he just ignored them. Other bettas have to be alone because they'll nip at anything that moves.

i was thinking of gettin the betta as you said 7 neons maybe a snail and like 6 or so ghost shrimp, my little one loves those for some reason everytime we go to the lfs, so i was thinking of puttin some in there as well as long as none of the fish will try to eat them? 1 last quick question is it better to go in odd numbers or even on schools? or does that matter at all? thanks agian.

some bettas may eat ghost shrimp but most don't. the neons will be fine. odd or even numbers wont matter

I would be careful with the ghost shrimp and a betta. My betta lives happily with the rasboras, but he persecuted my 6 amano shrimp (bigger than ghosties) by dive bombing them from the top of the tank. They only lasted 4 days.... Your betta may be different, but I would be prepared for the shrimp becoming a snack. Can't wait to see pics when it is all together!!
