i have a 20 long with 6 corys and an 1.5 inch bolivian ram. i want to add one or two other small personable fish (not necessarily cichlids) in there, along with (i need suggestions here too) a few small schooling fish.

the tank has lots of hidding places, lots of filtration, slightly high pH and slightly hard water.

any suggestions appriciated

Mollies are great. Easy going , fearless, many varieties, do good in hard water, and they have a lot of babies as a bonus.

You could go with Mollies as the toy man suggested. Other livebearers such as swordtails make a good choice also. Or the smaller rainbows. I'm a cichlid man but there are few fishes more attractive than Boesman's rainbow.

A pair of sword tails can be very attractive.

A second ram will be a nice addition you will be amased buy how much they play and yours will show all of its colors when another is in their.Even if male/male as long as they each have a square foot to call their own everything is cool.
Otherwise congo tetras are awesome.
Kribs, red tailed shark, clown loach, all would work nice.
Some of the fish I mentioned will need a larger home in a few YEARS so dont flame me:D

A male betta, or a few female bettas might be an option. Ive never kept rams and bettas together before (never kept rams at all actually), so I dont know if the ram would nip or not. Also bettas dont like a strong current, so keep that in mind if you decide to get one. Pretty much all bettas are personable (male anyway, Ive never kept females so I dont know how personable they are).

A nice peaceful, feisty and hardy schooling fish is the white cloud mountain minnow, normally easy to find and cheap. They have great colour and like to do little displays with each other. I kept my betta with them and some cories for a few months with no problems but though the betta would like a tank with less current. Of course one of his favorite things was to put out his fins and ride the waterfall from the AC Mini.

Don't overlook the humble old Paradisefish. A single male, especially in a 20 gallon tank, is usually quite peaceful. They're high personality, and they're fine in hard/high pH water or softer water - heck, if it's wet they're happy!

i've seen them before, always thought they would look really nice, except their finnage leaves much to be desired (somewhat clamped looking). Does this improve when the fish is in a community rather than fish store tank?

Yep, their finnage improves dramatically, especially if it's a male. It becomes long and flowing and when they're not cramped in with 45 other fish in a 20 long (at the LFS), they raise their fins up and show off quite a bit. They also color up a whole lot more at home than in the LFS. Nice stripes (the fish can go really dark when the mood stikes it), nice fins, just don't keep 2 males together (they're not quite as bad as male bettas, but close).

I have white cloud minnows and they are very active and very quick community fish... they're also rather good looking for a fairly cheap and extremely hearty fish... see above posts for more info on them...

i keep white clouds in two other tanks, i was hoping to try something new. I must say though, my white clouds the nicest coloration of any of my non-cichlids, i'd take them over any tetra or barb in a smaller tank.

Dwarf Gouramies are nice. Any species will look nice.
