View Full Version : Need ID...
When my betta died I decided my plecos new tank mate should be something closer to home...a cichlid. I only bought one so far to see how he does in my tank. I think I got all the information I needed to know to get started except his name! I was looking at several varieties of zebras and ended up getting the one that was least expensive. The guy I was talking too said he would get around 6 " and should do very well in my tank, given its conditions.
Anyway, here's a pic of the fish. If you can tell me any "need to know" info on him, that of course, is very welcome too.
Thanks a bunch!

He's just a tiny little thing right now. Barely an inch! He may be a little pale in the pic. too. He was still adjusting to the water.
My guess would be some sort of Aulonocara (peacock) species.
It's pretty hard to tell, when still young Alonocaras are pretty much look alikes. Just wait a month or maybe 2 when it starts to show more colour.
EDIT:I would say it is Aulonocara Lwanda "Red top" (juv.)
When your water reads about 7.9/8.5 pH, he should be alright.

Peacock!!!! THATS what the tag said. Red finned peacock. I'll give you an update pic. When he gets a bit bigger.
Was the salesman right about his Max. size? I was hoping to get him a buddy after he's adjusted to the tank.
Thanks again!!!!!

BTW
Jimmy's the name of the guy that sold me the fish. He has many impressive tattoos!:D
I've got a couple in my tank and they are 2 years old and about 5", please don't get me wrong, I assume it is an Aulonacara
It might as well could be something differend.
Lets just wait and see.
Edit: Well, it's not my real name but my friends in Australia sort of baptised me into Jimmy as they couldn't pronounce my true name.
I've lived there for 2 years and since then, I kind of
assumed my new name "Jimmy" ;)

Maybe some sort of Labidochromis species? The body shape doesn't look so Aulonocara-ish to me... maybe a function of the photo, though...

I don't claim to be the best photographer. Plus getting my camera to focus on something that small isn't easy either. Anywho, after spending his first night in the tank, his colors have really come out,and he's really fast too! I'm gonna HAVE to wait till he has grown some to take a second pic. He won't hold still! His stripes on his body have turned too contrasting blues, his fins are bright red with light yellow spots on his bottom fin. He also has an iridescent spot on each gill cover.
I've named him Jimmy in honour of the tattoo guy and jimbo. Best of all. He and Rammstein (the pleco) are getting along great. I'll give him two weeks and see if I can find him a friend.
Thanks again guys!
...wait. JSchmidt=Jim Just how many of you can a person encounter in a days time! I'm scared now...

definitely NOT an Aulonocara. The whole body and head shape is wrong. Its definitely a mbuna of some sort(thin and elongated body).
Heres a pic of my 2" F1 Lwanda Redtop
