i live in florida so it gets pretty hot. would that hurt the fish?

Are you going to dig a pond and line it, or build one above ground? Doing some research will help you get some idea of what direction you want to go, then you can ask more specific questions. A general question like " I need help building a pond" is going to be very difficult to answer with out some more details.

I wouldn't go less than 18" in Florida as anything shallower is not going to give the fish any place to seek refuge from the warmer water. I'd also try to have some natural or artificial partial shading on the pond that stays throughout the day.
