Hey guys,

I just wanted some other opinions on this....I'm planning on using a Filstar XP3 canister filter on my 75gal FOW(a little bit of)LR with a second filter. I'm undecided as to what to use for the second filter though. I'm going back and forth between another Filstar but the XP2 or an Aquaclear 110/500 or a Penguin 350.

Any thoughts?

I like the idea of the two canister filters because I want all external heating and with those I can get the in-line heaters but would two Filstars be over-kill?

I'm not sure how much live rock I'm going to put in yet, I've been told that with a reef tank you generally want 1-2lbs per gallon? I don't want nearly that much, I was thinking 50lbs max. What do you use for filters then if you have live-rock?

The live rock acts as the filter. Natural looking, you don't have to clean it and it is uber quiet to boot.

You can lighter on the pounds if you get a really pourous rock like Marshall Island. You'll have to go heavier if you get a really dense rock like Tonga Branch.

i dont believe you can over filter...if you dont want to use a higher ammount of live rock, using external filtration is great, just ensure that you keep on top of filter media cleaing every week in tank water, and your good to go....

Sounds great, thanks! I'm new the whole live-rock thing and obviously I've always used filters for freshwater so the idea of not using any filters and just relying on the live-rock scares me :( Plus I like the idea of having extra media in my external filters so when my quarantine tank/hospital tank need to be made of use I can just throw some media into the mini-canister filter for that tank and be ready to go!
