So what's the deal with diatoms building up in a new tank? This is a normal occurrence? And if so, when and how do they start going away?

I have just seen many people talking about it but I don't quite understand it.

Thanks

i can help with part of that....they occur with all new tanks...why idk im not a marine biologist (i wish though) but it is normal.....they will go away...so its nothing to be worried about just looks bad.....however if u get them again then u should b worried.....but someone with more experience will surely chime in

Diatoms are perfectly normal in new tanks and their presence indicates the ending of the cycle. They are not dangerous and normally go away on their own in due time. In an established tank, their presence indicates an excess of nutrients and silica...especially if tapwater is used to fill the tank.
