would it be overstocking if I put a comet and a black moor in a 20 gallon tank? Right now they are in a 5 and a half gallon tank but I'm planning on setting up my 20 gallon tank very soon. Right now the comet is about an inch and a half and the black moor is about an inch or so. I can post pictures if you guys need them. They are getting along fine and i will often see them swimming together. Now I know the comet will get very big so when he starts getting too big for the tank he will be going out in my 80 gallon container pond and if he outgrows that I'll move him to my Aunt's pond which is pretty big.

As long as that it is only temporary and that there is sufficient filtration to keep up with the amount of ammonia and nitrite that is produced. You would also need to observe if the comet is becoming too fast for the black moor when they are being fed. The slower varieties of goldfishes usually don't get enough food when the faster varieties are present. You would need to keep up with water changes when it becomes necessary.

Once the comet becomes too big then the 20G should be fine for the black moor.

I guess...

Thanks for the advice lucky777ca.
I plan on putting the comet goldfish outside in the contanier pond next summer. I think he's too little to overwinter just yet. What do you mean by:
"Once the comet becomes too big then the 20G should be fine for the black moor.

Black moors get like 6-8" long, no? Shouldn't he have a pond? Or at least that container you mentioned?

Well right now Jet (The black moor) is only a little over an inch. So he's too small to go outside just yet. Marvin (The comet) I think will be ready to go outside probably next summer. I just don't think he would do well overwintering outside.

I would say that once the comet gets too big for the tank, then it would become time to move it to the container pond. This will then provide the black moor a sufficient enough tank (20G is sufficient, although a 29G would be better).

Usually fancies can be kept in aquariums as stated above, some get bigger than the rest, which I think is the oranda, but most can be kept in a 20G alone, from what I'm hearing. The comets and the commons are usually the ones that would need to be upgraded to a pond since they get to more than 12" and are more active than the fancy varieties of goldfishes.

The comet should be fine as long as the container pond doesn't freeze solid as they are able to tolerate water temperatures above freezing. I think for the most part, the fancies will not be able to tolerate the overwintering due to the temperature. They are much more suited in a unheated aquarium, rather than being outside during the winter...

Hopefully it's correct...

The plan should work.

Be prepared to do frequent water changes. When I had my two fanices in a 20g long, I was doing several 30-50% a week.

fancies can usually do fine in a 20g alone with good maintenance. they usually don't do well in ponds because they are slower than pond fish need to be (comets, shubunkins, koi). black moors and other sight-impaired fish are especially bad for ponds because in addition to being slow movers, they have trouble identifying enemies and competing for food against the faster moving fish.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I may just try and put Marvin outside in the contanier pond soon then. I plan on getting a pond heater sometime in the fall. Here is a picture of Jet and Marvin.
