I recently acquired an orange sunflower coral, but I can't zero in the species since there are about 3 species of the genus Tubastraea that are commercialized, namely: T. faulkneri, T. aurea and T. coccinea.

What are the differences between these species?

It would most likely be T. Faulkneri. Don't think those other two species are even normally kept in the hobby. Maybe not? Don't think there would be much of a different besides appearance.

All the species are reasonably common in the hobby, depending upon where they are collected. Distinction between them can only really be found at the skeletal level--a bit too much to bother with, IMHO, not to mention difficult. Care is the same for all the species you listed, fortunately.

Thank Amp. for clarifying that for me...I was burning my eyelashes trying to determine the right species.

Now, everyone's telling me I must feed each and everyone of the heads, but the people at the shop told me otherwise. They advised to add plankton to the water and let it feed by itself. Whaddaya think?

I feed mine cyclop-eeze, mysis, brine, krill, reef chili, etc. Not sure if phyto would work in the long run but I do know these polyps are pigs! I'm still in the process of taking mine out for feedings.

Maybe this will help you:

Tubastrea spp., as well as pretty much all stony corals are carnivorous. They will not touch phytoplankton. I think 5vexy's feeding regime would work great for any Tubastrea spp. I would try to target feed them, unless you are feeding those foods to multiple corals, then I would let it spread throughout the tank. At least that way, you would save some water quality in the process. You have to be careful listening to LFSs sometimes.
