Hi i have another question if that is ok.

I have read somewhere that Crushed Coral is a disaster waiting to happen, can't think for the life of me which forum i had read it on,as i flip from one to another and try to absorb as much info as i can.

Anyway i was thinking of changing my CC to sand in my Nano tank.
Can someone please tell me how i go about swapping over.

At the moment i have put all the corals from the Nano tank into the main tank in the lounge,so all i have in the Nano are 2 clowns and lots of live rock and of course CC substrate.
Almost forgot to say the Nano is only 24 gallons.

Thanks.
Liz.

Hi Liz..

I asked the same question a while back, Niko said the best way to do it is with an old pillow case, scooping it into the case as it stops a massive sand storm.. I did this a few weeks ago to empty our tank so we could quarantine our fish and it worked, took a while but it worked.. :-)

Neenie said it well....

Also, to add...when swapping out the substrate, just do it in parts...say 1/3 at a time..as when you start to scoop out the sand, its going to release a lot of nasties into the tank that are normally locked away in the sand bed, and you could end up with a mini-cycle going on...so, it in 1/3's and you'll be all good...

i made a scoop out of an old juice jug, the ones with a rectangular type shape. cut the bottom off. i only scooped about 4 or 5 times, maybe 2 cups per scoop, each day. it did get messy. then it occured to me to vaccuum the area first with my syphon hose, duh! much less mess! the key is patience...it took me over a week, but all survived! as for sand, fill a 5 gall bucket about 1/2 way and blast with a hose, drain of what you can w/o losing sand. repear maybe 5 or 6 times, stirring sand as you do. follow up by just letting the hose run and over flow the pail until it looks pretty clear. drain what you can. i added the sand to the tank using a small 8 oz. cup. sand was damp, no mess at all! GOOD LUCK! oh yea, i did a final rinse with water conditioner so as not to have anything harmful from the tap water
