I would try and find out what's causing the excess growth of algae (sorry I cannot see your tank) :(

Here is a Great link! http://www.plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=9

5G tank...In an established tnak the Otos will get enough food. What's the nitrAte reading and are you near a window? How long are the lights on?

Welcome to AC! ;)

just get the magfloat or similar type cleaning tool. Also look to control your feeding or lighting to help control the algae growth. If you can adjust things to slow or stop the growth then a clean up crew won't be needed. And if there is a little the mag cleaner will take it quickly off.

LOL 1 min apart with similar advice...you go CT-death

thanks for the compliments..:grinyes:

mm i want to try to avoid using a magfloat =D.. im leaning towards clean up crews.. ^^ what fish gets rid of brown algae on the wall? or is a snail required?

ct-death - lights are on from 1.20pm till 11.30pm approx. =) about 10hours of good lighting. mmm is 2meters away from the window considered close?

akapaul26 - really? i thought they do well alone... many dwarf puffer owners has 1otto in about every 5gallons in a tank with the puffers and they are doing fine i suppose?

1pm until 11:30pm is about 10 hours, but the natural lighting in the room is also contributing some. 2 meters is a good distance, but the light coming into the room will add a few extra hours worth of lighting into the tank.

What is the stock now?

The issue with an Oto is a 2-fold: 1) they don't like to be alone if it can be avoided, and 2) they don't eat all forms of algae, particularily the long hair-type algae.

Otos are very fast workers, so for established moderately planted tanks, 1 Oto per 10g is a pretty good rule of thumb. A single Oto can clean out a heavily planted 5g in a day or two... then what is it supposed to do? You can supplement w/ algae wafers, but I think they prefer fresh and they do like to be in groups. Snails would be a better choice as they do a pretty good job on glass and they'll clean up leaves as well (if not quite as gently as Otos).
