That dempsey in the picture, is that considered a good specimen? Will the average dempsey look as good as that when they reach adulthood?

I have a small juvenile right now. I've also kept them in the past, but not long enough for them to reach maturity. I'm debating whether to get rid of this juvenile or not and get something else. But if he will look like that, then perhaps I will put up the funds to get him his own tank (he's pugnacious, that's why I want to either get rid of him or get him his own tank).

Thanks

thats a unique picture. most jacks dont have that much variety of color.

most look like this

and often have a darker and more blue complexion.

I think this picture was taken with the right lights and perhaps even retouched. Most pictures look a bit like mr.Jingel's.

They tend to change color with mood and stresslevel (darker when stressed). Also depending on what lights you have the fish will reflect more or less of the iridescens - I think that 18 000K or 20 000K lights really bring out the blue/green.

is that possible to get the light at that degree? Ive only heard of over 10 000k lights. never 20 000k. that would be one bright sun.

anyways, I dont think I quite understand the thing about that I had to post before the information could be right, but it doesnt really matter. Jacks are like the one in the picture I posted.

Did you ever try lighting your tank at an angle of 60 degrees?
Light falling through the front glass on them may show you some colors that are not visible when the light is coming straight from above. This is absolutely true for my Malawi Peacocks. Their colors are far more iridescent when this light is swiched on.
You should try it.
