Hello,
When you say cheapish, how cheap are you talking? I have a Emperor 400 on my 4 foot 70 gallon tank and it seems to be doing a good job. I also have a Emperor 280 on my 20 gallon high tank and it's doing a good job as well. I think I paid around $40.00 for the Emperor 280, and about $69.00 for the 400.
You could go with Marinelands less expensive Penguin model as well.

ok, u know whats annoying, the fact that in australia, we pay 250 buks for something u pay 30 for, :@ ie aquaclear 500
Sorry guy, it doesn't get much cheaper for a big power filter than an Aquaclear. Have you looked at the Whisper filters?

I just bought a penguin 330 on big al's the other day for $23, wow, maybe you should try ebay or something and see if the price difference is just in the exchange rate or if you are getting bent over. either that or I saw a pretty cool filter in the DIY section earlier today, maybe you should consider that.

I think at that size you won't find anything comparable to the AC 500 for less $.
I guess you could look at running an undergravel filter run by powerheads. Or some large sponge filters also run by powerheads. Don't have any clue about how these would be priced in Australia.
Anyway, if those are your prices on power filters, wouldn't it make more sense to buy mail order from the USA and pay the shipping. The combined total should be less than what you stated. I hope...
Like the last guy said...try Ebay.

I paid $23.99 for my Aquaclear 300 at THAT PET PLACE... Can't get much cheaper than that..... Its on my heavily stocked african tank and its a 55 gallon.... Along with two internal powerheads.. So far so good....
Just my 2 cents....

wow i thought it's expensive over here in Malaysia.
1. AC500 is VERY RARE here.
2. usually priced at RM210+/-
hehe. i got it the other day at RM150. it's a steal. i think that's about 75 au$ ?
there are cheaper ones, but i don't know how good are they. they're from china/taiwan. should be ok but won't be as lasting.
i was thinking how good was the AC500 until the day i bought it, i tell u even you can feel the diff from the way it's build. i like it.
