I've got two filters running on my 28 gallon tank and I want to replace the media in the filter bags (was just activated carbon which no longer holds it's intended function). The oldest filter has now been set to a lower flow rate, and neither filter bag really contains a large amount of carbon, so I'm just curious if I can get away with completely dumping out the carbon from the bag in the lower flow filter to replace it with something else? Am I wrong to guesstimate that I'd be losing about 1/4 - 1/3 of the tanks total colony?

Also trying to donate the media to a friend, hence why I'm trying to estimate the bioload handling ability that I'm removing from my tank and hopefully passing on to someone else.

One filter at a time, and you should be okay.

Wait, are you taking out all of the media from your filter, if yes, then you would have problems.
