I picked up six Amano shrimp yesterday. They immediately hid at the top of my 33G tank. How many do I need in the tank for them to come out of hiding? I had (obviously) thought that six would be enough and was (even more obviously) wrong.

Any ideas?

give them a couple more days to get settled, and then see how they act. I would think 6 is more than enough.

i bought 6 for my 46 bowfront and never seen them since i had guppies and 1 m betta i assumed the betta or guppies ate them so i moved the betta and bought 15 more and i have only saw about 4 at one time but have seen 3 shells so if they are molting they must be doing ok.. the ones i seen so far are huge the weren't that big when i bought them.. only had 3-4 weeks.. their there just hidding..

I'm guessing they're just hiding.

I added four about a week ago, and I've never seen more than one at a time (I figure the betta ate some), even during a water change. Much more reserved than the big ghosts I've had previously.

Oh, i'm pretty certain they're hiding as well. I managed to find one hiding in my driftwood, although it scurried deeper inside after I left th flashlight on it. If they don't start poking their heads out eventually I may get a few more but, hm, at $3 or $4 a shrimp I may just stick to red cherries.

I have six of them in a ten gallon and I usually only see one to three at a time. Eventually they will get more acclimated to their new home and come out more. The common view is that you will see about one third of your shrimp population at a time in a planted tank. I'd get some more. They put a very small hit on your bio-load.

With that large of a tank (with plenty of hiding places) you would need something like 10 to 15 to be sure of seeing some all of the time.

I have 6 in my 55 lightly planted with driftwood and rocks. After introduction on 2 different batches the newbies hid for a day or two but then were visable most of the time. These shrimp are much more interesting to watch that ghosts and get much bigger too. They are like little lawn mowers and will do an excellent job of cleaning up. They went right to work and they keep things stirred up in the tank. I have to go around once in awhile mushing snails for these guys and they go right to town eating them up but only if I mush em first. I recomend these shrimp to anyone.

Q

they are definately hiding, unfortunately thats what they do at first..give them time, like mine they will settle in and then start exploring..once they do that theres no stopping them..very active,in fact mine go balistic when i feed my fish, the first on the scene when the flakes drop towards the bottom .

these guys are excellent at hiding

i was in a lfs a couple of weeks ago...my wife said she wanted the bamboo shrimp in the tank over there...the young guy said theres none left as he had bought them all himself...we looked in and there it was feeding away...there was only one small bit of bogwood in the tank as decoration.....

now imagine a well decorated / planted tank....these guys know how to hide!
