Using Natural Sources

I live on the beach so saltwater and sand are readily available. I've read that collecting salt water isn't such a terrible idea. How do I sterilize and filter this? What about beach sand?

Not safe unless you go far out to collect it and then go through the trouble to purify it. I'd personally stick to RO/DI and a good salt mix and buy aragonite.

Not safe. Ever notice the foamy stuff along the shoreline? Consider that natural skimate. I'd not use water or sand near that for anything.
