hi charlie, see you have no replies on this one
i'm setting up a 300l malwai just now so have been doing research
my understanding is that they eat alga and tiny inverts in nature
this is why we have to feed them 2-3 times per day with a vegetable based food
however its also good to feed them something like brine shrimp onece a week
need to be very careful with overfeeding to avoid malawi bloat

Mbuna need a vegetable based diet. I looked up freeze dried plankton and it seems to have alot of animal protein in it (one site said 68% for their brand), so IMO I would not feed them that. I'd stick to spirulina based flakes and occasional frozen brine shrimp (which doesn't have near as much crude protein).

San Francisco Bay's Emerald Entree, Ocean Nutrition's Formula 2, and Hikari Cichlid Excel are perfect foods to feed them.
