I'm in the process of setting up a new 50g tank, with a plan to feature a couple of discus. I'll be moving the contents of a 24g heavily planted tank into it and want to know if these current occupants will be OK with new discus: 6 cardinals, 2 German rams, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 angel (silver dollar size body), 2 corys and a SAE. The angel is the most aggressive in this bunch.

I also need to decide how much light to use. I've got plants now that have done fine with 34 watts of 10K PC lighting and Eco-Complete in that smaller tank. The new 50g tank is about 20 inches high.

Any thoughts?

Young discus require frequent feedings and frequent water changes. It is for this reason that it is generally not recommended to grow out young discus in a planted, gravel bottom tank, but rather to keep them in a barebottom tank until they are adults. Young discus should be kept in a temp of 84-86F. You can drop the temp just a little 82-84F when they are adults. The cardinals, rams and angels will tolerate those temps too. Some cories can't tolerate those temps and will die rather quickly. What type of cories do you have? Angels and Discus can be kept together with some caution. The angels, especially veiltails, will grow large very fast and can be very aggressive at feeding time and outcompete the discus for food. I've had it happen and moved the angels out. They actually began to chase the discus away from the food. If you can get 4 - 4.5" discus, that would be a better size than 2-3" juvies. SAE's develop a taste for discus slime coat and once they start, they don't stop. I would trade him in for a Bristlenose pleco. I don't have much experience with gouramis so I can'r really comment on that fish. I have read that the dwarfs are very peaceful. Hope this helps.

Hi Jon,
My discus don't bother the existing tetras at all! But new ones make yummy snacks!!
