Nah, its not a Venustus. If it came out of an assorted tank, it is probably a hybrid.

Tarheels is right, the majority of cichlids in Assorted cichlid tanks are hybrids...and it isnt a Nimbochromis Venustus...

Yeah, the problem with hybrids are that LFS's don't know what the cross breeds are the majority of the time...but they are still cool to have...the one you have is really cool looking though...
the pattern on it is really cool...

where did you get that fish from? i remember going to someone's house to buy a swordtails and he had a tankful of cichlids that he couldn't identify. i asked him about it and he said he got it from a fish association convention. kinda reminds me of your fish.. except he was breeding them and we both were clueless as to what it was.. just that it was from south or central america.. urs looks like a rift lake species tho.. hmm good luck!

I thought it was a Livingstonii at one point, but when you look at it again it looks more like a hybrid.

I actually got him, a venustus, an ahli, ice top blue zebra, a yellow lab, german red, a bumblebee, and a johanni off craiglist for $30.00 they are all pretty big too

placido milomo is what he is...or big lipped hap or vc-10. I found out through a cichlid website. If he is male he will start to turn blue.

Not all Jags are known to have spots. Some actually do have light stripes on them. My baby Jag is golden brown with stripes, but he is only 2" right now so I know the stripes will fade away a bit and he'll start spotting up a bit.

it's almost like a jag and a jewel mixed because of the spots on the fins. it's cool looking all the same.

Its like impossible for a Jag and a Jewel to breed.
